Looking for a new challenge it was by chance that I came across the sport of triathlon. Swim, bike, run? Sounded interesting. I could swim, I could run and you never forget to ride a bike

Peter FTSo I entered my first race, a sprint race in Norwich in July 2010, 750 metre open water, 20 km bike and a 5km run. All I needed to do was find a local club to train with and get some sound advice on triathlon. (Oh and get a bike and a wetsuit for the open water swim.) So I joined Dunmow Tri in January 2010. After completing the race in Norwich I did the Dunmow club tri in the September; and that was my first season in triathlon.

I looked into the sport more and with the knowledge and experiences from other club members found that there was not just the sprint distance, there was an Olympic distance (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run), a middle distance (1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21km run) and the Ironman distance. (3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run).

The plan was an Olympic distance in 2011, a middle in 2012 then the Ironman in 2013. After a bit of coaching or should I say coaxing, 2011 turned into 2 sprints, one Olympic and culminated with Challenge Henley, a middle, in the September. (A year ahead of schedule.) I went on holiday the day after the middle and struggled to walk up the stairs to the apartment.

2012 brought the Olympics to the UK and (what turned into) my first Ironman in the July, Ironman UK. I remember during the marathon telling my wife that I would never do another one, this didn’t last long and I had entered the same race a few days after getting home.

I have now completed 8 Ironman races. In 2016 I did three, Ironman Mallorca, Ironman Maastricht and Ironman Lanzarote; all great races in different ways.

I have retired from the sport many times in 2016, (This has not been a good year for me and the 4th discipline in Ironman, nutrition.) but the finishing chute keeps me going back for more and preparations for next years races have already started.
